The French is one of the “must paddle” Canadian rivers, flowing through typical Canadian Shield country, tumbling southward beside rugged glaciated rock cliffs and through heavily forested areas. The mouth of the river, which empties into Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay, contains countless islands and numerous channels of narrow, steep-walled gorges and falls and rapids.
The French River is historically significant. It was used as a transportation corridor by the Algonquian peoples of this region, and also the Ojibwa. The Europeans named it the "French River" because it became associated with French explorers of the 17th century
